S1 Episode 51: Open Table The Sound of Coaching - Resonance and Dissonance
Wednesday Dec 22, 2021
Wednesday Dec 22, 2021
Today Claire is talking with Barbara MacNish and Sandra Thompson. They emailed info@3dcoaching.com with a question: "Since completing the Transforming Conversations training earlier this year a group of us have continued to practice together on Thursdays once a month. We've re-practised all sorts of the tools you introduced us to on the course. In October's session we tried out "matching for rapport and contrasting for change" - we had a good laugh and discovered some great truths but felt that we would really benefit from another go and if possible, even a demo showing us how it's done." So we said come to The Coaching Inn and let’s talk…
We discuss the importance of trust, invitation, and the musicality of coaching. The conversation highlights the power of small actions and the need to be conscious of the impact of mismatching and the value of practicing these techniques and the potential for growth and transformation.

Wednesday Dec 15, 2021
Wednesday Dec 15, 2021
Today Claire is talking with coach Julian Mack who emailed info@3dcoaching.com with a question: 'Here's my challenge, I am concerned that I'm falling into corporate babble speak on my website. The hackneyed 'potential' reference came up in your discussion with Jeff Matthews and I winced. Maybe there's a way of making it a podcast entitled - how to avoid falling into the corporate babble trap?' So we said come to The Coaching Inn and let’s talk…
In this episode, Claire Pedrick and Julian Mack discuss how new coaches can avoid falling into the trap of using corporate babble and cliches in their coaching practice. They explore the importance of being authentic and straightforward in their messaging, and the challenge of marketing oneself without overpromising. They also discuss the value of simplicity in coaching and the power of being a thinking companion. The conversation highlights the need for new coaches to find their own unique proposition and to focus on building relationships and networks of supporters.

We asked you to contact us if you wanted to share your learning from reading Simplifying Coaching. Executive Coach Fran Smith contacted us from Brazil. Listen to some of the benefits of Fran simplifying her own coaching. Fran is especially interested in coaches working in a second language: I see coaches who could be working in a second language and they aren't because they think their English isn't perfect. It doesn't have to be when you do less!
Do contact Fran if you want to be part of that movement!

Wednesday Nov 24, 2021
Wednesday Nov 24, 2021
Today Claire is talking with Josephine Knowles who emailed info@3dcoaching.com with a question: I would love to reflect on how coaching can be useful in terms of power and powerlessness and working with those facing survival sex/sexual exploitation So we said come to The Coaching Inn and let’s talk…
Jose is also a teacher of Argentinian Tango so there's some great insights on partnership and coaching as a dance. 'We need to get over ourselves. And then start working with people'
“If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” - Lilla Watson
Takeaways
- Coaching can be a valuable tool in working with individuals facing powerlessness and trauma, as it offers a partnership approach that empowers rather than disempowers.
- The coach's role is to hold space for the client, honoring their personal power and allowing them to explore their own insights and solutions.
- Coaching is an art that requires presence, connection, and improvisation, similar to Argentine tango.
- Coaches should reflect on their own power and privilege, and approach coaching with humility and a focus on the other person's needs.
- It is important to ask clients what they need in each moment and co-create the coaching process with them.
- Coaching is not about fixing or rescuing, but about empowering clients to find their own path forward.
